Blood Withdrawal Course Details

The blood withdrawal course offered by PhlebotomyU consists of two components.

Didactic

The Blood Withdrawal Course provides an overview of  phlebotomy fundamentals that include Order of Draw, site selection, common equipment, pre and post op care instructions and common tubes and their functions.

Practical

The Blood Withdrawal Course also provides hands-on experience with blood collecting devices and demonstrations of safe handling and proper venipuncture techniques.

Students are expected to participate in all demonstrations and training activities, including drawing blood on fellow students and having their blood drawn.

The 3-day course is intended to familiarize and improve blood drawing skills in a non-diagnostic setting (19-4061) only and does not qualify as a CPT I full course.

For larger groups, we can also tailor curriculum to align with research organizations’ SOPs and practices.

Course Overview

Brief, cost-effective course for research assistants and clinical trial coordinators

This course is designed for individuals who are currently employed as Research Assistants, Clinical Trial Coordinators, Medical Assistants, or others working in a non-diagnostic setting (19-4061). This course is not designed to prepare individuals for a career in phlebotomy. It serves more for the continuing education of individuals where obtaining human blood samples may be included among their other job duties. Successful participants will be awarded a Certificate of Participation from the PhlebotomyU training center upon completion of the course.

Course Content

Comprehensive review and hands-on instruction

Our instruction is a review of human anatomy and physiology with a focus on the blood and circulatory systems. Special emphasis is placed on possible complications arising from human error when withdrawing blood and the proper responses for potential complications. This session ends with a detailed discussion of universal precautions including OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens standard to safeguard against the transmission of bloodborne diseases. We also introduce state-of-the-art blood collecting devices and demonstrate safe handling techniques. Students shall participate in all laboratory demonstrations so licensed instructors can also assess their application of course information.

Upon Course Completion

Successful participants should have a well-rounded understanding of how to perform a blood withdrawal based on the theory presented in the didactic portion of the course as well as practical experience on how to properly perform a blood withdrawal on a live person. Upon instructor approval of the student’s successful completion of the blood withdrawal course, they will be awarded an official Certificate of Participation from PhlebotomyU.
