AN EXCEPTIONAL PHLEBOTOMY EDUCATION
Though phlebotomy training may not be required in every state, it is highly recommended to undergo a training program to get the education you need and to set yourself apart from other applicants. Navigating which program to enroll in may be a challenging process, especially if you don’t know where to begin.
Before enrolling in a phlebotomy program, do your research to confirm that the school has a strong reputation (e.g. Yelp reviews, google reviews, etc.) and if applicable, is accredited or approved by a recognized state-approved agency and that the course is approved by the state’s Public Health Department.
In California, all phlebotomy training programs must be approved by the California Department of Public Health and provide a minimum of 40 hours of in-classroom phlebotomy instruction and 40 hours of internship experience at an approved clinical lab or hospital. However, it is strongly recommended that students receive at least 80-100 hours of in-classroom instruction to ensure that students have ample time to absorb the information and practice their blood drawing skills in a controlled setting. This additional classroom time also helps to better prepare students to successfully pass a recognized national phlebotomy exam (e.g. the NCCT exam) and complete their internship. Prospective students should consider a school’s national exam pass rate as a good indicator of the school’s ability successfully prepare their students.
Another thing to consider when deciding on a school is to understand the number and types of internship opportunities available. It is important that a school offers a large number and wide variety of internships opportunities to ensure that students are able to successfully complete their internship in a timely fashion, including performing at least 50 blood draws and 10 finger sticks.
SCHOOL INVOLVEMENT
The school you attend should be regularly involved in your progress and offering new ways to help you get the career you want. An easy way to make sure that a school is right for you is to look up the school’s instructors. When analyzing their credentials, it is necessary to ask yourself the following questions:
- Do the instructors meet my state’s experience requirements?
- Do the instructors excel at teaching phlebotomy theory, such as anatomy, physiology, and blood and cell composition?
- Do the instructors excel at teaching practical skills, blood drawing techniques, lab safety, procedures, etc.?
- What is my instructor’s experience? Have they successfully worked in the phlebotomy field?
When entering a new field, you may not have a full grasp on things. That’s okay – your school should have your back. When looking into different phlebotomy programs, it is comforting to know that your school offers multiple support services to get you where you want to be. With a program emphasizing a certain occupation, the school should assist their students with phlebotomy resume preparation, job interview skills, and have a running list of readily available jobs upon the training’s completion. Additionally, the school you choose should track their students’ prerequisites and course standing to ensure their students are qualified to attend the course and complete their internship.
